Pediatric Heartsaver First Aid, CPR, & AED

Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED Basic provides students training in the lifesaving skills of first aid, CPR, and use of an AED with infants and children. This course empowers students to act with confidence in the event of an emergency at work, home, or in the community, and is designed for anyone with little or no medical training. This course will prepare you to recognize and care for cardiac arrest and other first aid emergencies, and offers two course pathways which let you cover topics that best fit your needs. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid, CPR, & AED which is valid for two years.

Course Objectives

  • Describe how high-quality CPR improves survival
  • Explain the concepts of the Chain of Survival
  • Recognize when someone needs CPR
  • Perform high-quality CPR for infants and children
  • Describe how to perform CPR with help from others
  • Give effective breaths by using mouth-to-mouth or a mask
  • Demonstrate how to use an AED on children and infants
  • Describe when and how to help someone who is choking
  • Recognize the legal questions that apply to first aid rescuers
  • List the duties, roles, and responsibilities of a first aid rescuer
  • Describe the 4 key steps in pediatric first aid: prevent, protect, assess, and act
  • Remove protective gloves
  • Find the problem
  • Describe the assessment and first aid actions for the following life-threatening conditions: difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding, and shock
  • Control bleeding and bandaging
  • Use an epinephrine pen
  • Recognize elements of common illnesses and injuries
  • Describe how to find information on preventing illness and injury
  • Describe the risks of smoking and vaping and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle

Heartsaver Pediatric Traditional
  • Delivery: Traditional/Instructor-Led
  • Duration: 5 hours

This course pathway covers the basics of pediatric CPR and first aid topics, including pediatric CPR, AED, & choking relief, and a few prominent first aid topics. All other topics, including adult CPR/AED, are optional. This format of Heartsaver uses a traditional learning approach that is completed entirely in person. Students will watch informational videos, broken up by instructor lectures and demonstrations, and will then practice and test hands-on skills.

Topics: Introduction; Child CPR/AED; Infant CPR/AED; Pediatric Choking Relief; Key Steps of First Aid/Finding the Problem; Precautions/Exposure to Blood; Allergic Reactions; Asthma;  Heart Attack; Stroke; External Bleeding; Internal Bleeding.

 

HeartCode Heartsaver Pediatric
  • Delivery: Blended Learning/Hybrid
  • Duration of Online Simulation: 2-4 hours
  • Duration of In-Person Skills Session: 1 hours
  • Price: $60.00 (Includes the skills session & certification; does not include cost of online course)
  • Online Requirements: Completion of HeartCode Heartsaver Pediatric online course

 

This format of Heartsaver covers the same topics as Heartsaver Pediatric Traditional, but uses a blended learning approach which utilizes part online and part in-person delivery methods for course completion, and is ideal for students looking for a shorter in-person class time. Students will complete the self-paced HeartCode Heartsaver Pediatric online course through the AHA eLearning website, which guides student through all required topics. Afterwards, you will attend an in-person session to practice and test all hands-on skills with an instructor.

You must complete the HeartCode Heartsaver Pediatric online prior to your in-person session. Bring a hard-copy of the Completion Certificate you receive after finishing the online course to your skills session, or email it to info@medultralearning.com. We cannot test your skills without this certificate.

Shana Belle Taylor, NC EMT-B

Shana Taylor joined MedUltra’s team in 2021 as a Basic Life Support and First Aid/CPR/AED instructor for the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross. In 2022, she took on an administrative role within the company, and is now MedUltra’s Director of Operations.

In addition to her career with MedUltra, Shana is a North Carolina certified EMT-B, and is currently furthering her education in administration and management.

Outside of her professional pursuits, Shana enjoys a range of artistic hobbies including drawing, painting, and photography, and outdoor activities such as kayaking and hiking with her dog, Florence.

Christina Marie keatley, MHS, NRP

Christina is co-founder and owner of MedUltra Learning. She is a National Registered and NC certified paramedic, with 15 years of experience. She has served in supervisory and leadership capacities within her EMS department.

Christina is a seasoned EMS educator, public speaker, and advocate for first responder mental health. Christina earned her Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in Emergency Medical Care from Western Carolina University in 2014, followed by a Master of Health Science in 2017.

Outside of her professional pursuits, Christina enjoys activities such as beach outings, camping, fishing, gardening, and spending quality time with her young children and pets.
