First Aid for Severe Trauma (FAST)

Uncontrolled bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death from trauma. The American Red Cross First Aid for Severe Trauma (FAST) program provides participants with the knowledge and skills they need to respond to an emergency involving life-threatening bleeding. The program is designed to enhance participants’ ability to take decisive, lifesaving action to assist a person with a traumatic injury and life-threatening bleeding until professional responders arrive.

Course Objectives

  • State the importance of personal safety for the responder and for the injured person
  • Distinguish life-threatening bleeding from the non-life threatening bleeding
  • Demonstrate high-level communication skills in an emergency setting
  • Communicate essential information to a 9-1-1 dispatcher
  • Describe methods used to stop bleeding
  • Describe positions of comfort for an injured person
  • Demonstrate how to apply direct pressure and use a tourniquet to stop bleeding

FAST Traditional
  • Delivery: Traditional/Instructor-Led
  • Duration: 1.25 hours

This course follows a traditional class format, where are topics and hands-on skills are discussed and completed in-person. This format is great for those seeking more in-person time with the instructor, or who prefer a traditional class setting.

 

FAST Blended
  • Delivery: Blended Learning/Hybrid
  • Duration of Online Simulation: 1.5 hours
  • Duration of In-Person Skills Session: .75 hours
  • Price: $__ (Includes the skills session & certification)

 

This course follows a blended/hybrid class format, where all course topics are covered through an online course prior to an in-person session to practice and test all hands-on skills with an instructor. This format is great for students looking for a shorter in-person class time. Once registered for this course, student’s will be assigned the online coursework through the American Red Cross website.

You must complete the FAST online course prior to your in-person session. Bring a hard-copy of the Completion Email you receive after finishing the online course to your skills session, or email it to info@medultralearning.com. We cannot test your skills without this certificate.

Shana Belle Taylor, NC EMT-B

Shana Taylor joined MedUltra’s team in 2021 as a Basic Life Support and First Aid/CPR/AED instructor for the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross. In 2022, she took on an administrative role within the company, and is now MedUltra’s Director of Operations.

In addition to her career with MedUltra, Shana is a North Carolina certified EMT-B, and is currently furthering her education in administration and management.

Outside of her professional pursuits, Shana enjoys a range of artistic hobbies including drawing, painting, and photography, and outdoor activities such as kayaking and hiking with her dog, Florence.

Christina Marie keatley, MHS, NRP

Christina is co-founder and owner of MedUltra Learning. She is a National Registered and NC certified paramedic, with 15 years of experience. She has served in supervisory and leadership capacities within her EMS department.

Christina is a seasoned EMS educator, public speaker, and advocate for first responder mental health. Christina earned her Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in Emergency Medical Care from Western Carolina University in 2014, followed by a Master of Health Science in 2017.

Outside of her professional pursuits, Christina enjoys activities such as beach outings, camping, fishing, gardening, and spending quality time with her young children and pets.
